Unit 2 PPD Project
The project I undertook focused on exploring and investigating areas in London. It was done in order to research interesting places such as galleries, libraries and green spaces that would become a scavenger hunt game.
The area we were told to research was Kentish Town, a very small but lively place with a flourishing culture.
Due to a series of problems I entered my game-group a few weeks late.
Initially, when I started the project, it was difficult for me to understand what the ideas were and organise myself in order to collaborate in a constructive way with my team.
For this reason I started conducting my own research using the Internet and the library resources. I did this in order to find out information, such that I would not be unprepared relative to my team. However, given that they had already been there together as a group, they were much better acquainted with the subject matter.
Following their research, exploration of the area and preliminary thinking on the clues, the fresh perspective that I brought to the game was very helpful for evaluating the scope of the task. We went as a pair to Kentish Town with the draft of the task and pretended to do the real scavenger hunt, following all the clues to test the game to see if it worked. This proved to be very useful because we found that a lot of the clues didn’t work; for example, the group used the library’s online catalogue to find a book, which could help the other team to look for a clue that gave the team essential information for finding subsequent locations to be visited. When we went there we realised that the Kentish Town library didn’t have that book. Obviously if we hadn’t been there we would never have been able to discover that problem and our game would have been unplayable. So we changed a few things around, and when we got back together we discussed these issues with the team. I think our group knew ways to make the group work better and acted upon them. It improved the organisation of our group.
If I was to do it again, I would add things to make the game more exciting, adventurous and enjoyable.
This is a great exercise to understand how research ought to be. It is essential to first find things out from books, newspaper and the internet but afterwards it was also very important to get to the place and work them out in practice. It was also important in order to understand the atmosphere of the place.
The combination of a library, the internet and empirical research worked out well for this project (the hunt).
Overall, we worked well together, trying to create a structured and challenging full brief that allowed the hunters to explore the town through our eyes.
